asana
Asana Yoga is a form of yoga comprising of physical postures that are practiced together with deep breathing to allow a full and deep relaxation of the body, while increasing blood flow and oxygen to the area being worked on. Asana will also strengthen, balance and stabilize the body. Using different movements and postures, the Asana practice uses the physical body as a primary focus for integration. It has certain therapeutic effects, even going so far as to gently massage the internal organs. The mental well-being of the student is also enhanced as each posture requires the student to incorporate proper breathing and mental concentration. Not only will you feel more physically fit, you will also experience clarity of mind. It also helps to cure disorders of the nervous system; generally bringing peace of mind.
For an effective Asana practice that results in steadiness and comfort, strength and flexibility,
-
Understand and appreciate the connection between your body, breath and mind.
-
Evaluate your resistance to the proposed practice in terms of your body, breath and mind.
Use your breath to recognize and reduce resistance, to evaluate the intelligence of your effort, and to determine whether you are accomplishing your aim.

About the Teachers...
Stoney has been teaching Yoga since 1997, she is a counselor to inmates both past and present. She is also a volunteer teacher at Dover Park Hospice. In the past couple of years, Stoney has used this customized therapy program successfully with cancer patients, helping them to reduce their pain and stress as well as to improve their physical strength.
Stoney is certified Shiatsu practitioners and a Reiki master. Her observation and experience have enable her to create this unique form of alternative therapy that one may find extremely beneficial.
In her yoga classes, she teaches not only yoga postures but also how each posture is related to the body’s meridians and acupuncture points (derived from traditional Chinese medicine). Through consistent yoga practice, students not only experience increased flexibility and strength, they can also achieve optimum therapeutic effects from each yoga posture, e.g. relief from stress and insomnia.
In addition, through her years of practice and teaching, she has learned and observed much about how the movement of the human body can reflect the emotional well being of a person. With dance therapy classes, she helps students overcome emotional problems by expressing their frustrations through the various movements.
Jacqueline, co-founder of Basic Essence, started her yoga path 6 years ago. She teaches hatha yoga combined with Buddhist mindfulness. She approach each class with a sense of mindfulness & curiousity, allowing the class to be a time to awaken & re-connect with self & all there is. She is also an aromatherapist, flower essence & reiki practitioner.
