Learn Tibetan Medicine - Introduction to Tibetan Medicine & the Four Tantras

In this module we will study the fundamentals of Tibetan language and the origins, history, schools, and contemporary practice of TTM. We will explore essential concepts including interdependent connection (tendrel), cause and effect (Karma), and continuous authentic education (tantra), and will learn how the building blocks of the five elements form our body, energy, mind, and the world around us.

We will then embark on our study of the Four Medical Tantras, the root textsof TTM, with their mnemonic system of illustrated trees. We will particularly focus on the Root Tantra, of which it is said "If you understand the Root Tantra well, you understand all of Tibetan Medicine".

Learn Tibetan Medicine - Root of Health & Disease in TTM

Theory Part 2 of 4
In-person or online

In this module, we will study the fundamental principles of health and disease in TTM.

TTM explains that the nature of health is balance, and thee nature of disease is imbalance. We will learn about the dynamic energetic qualities known as the three nyepa (wind, bile, and phlegm), and study the seven body constituents and three waste products. We will learn how, when these energetic an dphysical aspects are in balance, we are well-nourished and enjoy good health, long life, and a balanced and happy mind.

We will also study the fundamentals of pathology, including the causes and contributing conditions of disease. We will learn how disease manifests when the nyepa become deficient, in excess, or disordered in the various parts and systems of the body, and how diseases can be grouped into the two categories of hot-natured (inflammatory) diseases and cold-natured (metabolic) diseases.

Learn Tibetan Medicine - Root of Diagnosis in TTM

In this module, we will study the fundamental principles of TTM diagnosis presented in the Root Tantra. This includes the basic approaches of inspection (of the tongue and urine), palpation (of the pulse), and dialogue with the patient, each according to the three nyepa. We will also develop a working understanding of constitutional typology based on the three nyepa, and will consider how TTM diagnosis compares and contrasts with diagnostic approaches used in modern medicine.

This module establishes the theoretical basis for the practical diagnosis techniques taught in FTTM 2.1 - 2.2.

Learn Tibetan Medicine - Root of Treatment in TTM

In this module, We will study the fundamental principles of TTM treatment presented in the Root Tantra. We will learn how TTM therapies encourage the maintenance of health while also offering techniques to relieve symptoms and to cure the root disease. We will explore TTM's many approaches to treatment, including diet and lifestyles regimens, natural and herbal medicines, and external therapies, each according to the three nyepa. We will also consider how TTM treatment options compare and contrast with those offered by modern medicine.

This module establishes the theoretical basis of the practical treatment techniques taught in FTTM levels 3 - 5.

Foundations of TTM

Two-Year Training in
Tibetan Medicine & Therapeutics

Traditional Tibetan Medicine (TTM) is one of the oldest healing traditions in existence. It offers a vast medical knowledge that is accessible to everyone, and supports the cultivation of a happy mind along with a healthy body.

Designed for laypeople as well as health practitioners from all traditions, the Foundations of TTM program:

  • Offers in-depth study of the fundamentals of the Traditional Tibetan Medicine theory, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Provides comprehensive practical training in
    - Lifestyle and diet regimens
    - natural and herbal medicines
    - external healing therapies

The program forms the basis of the broader Tibetan Medicine & Therapeutics curricula offered by Sorig Khang International (SKI, pronounced "sky"). Upon graduation, students will receive a SKI certificate and may pursue more advanced levels of TTM studies at SKI centers worldwide.

The program will be offered by additional Sorig Khang centers in the near future. Students may complete modules at any location to fulfill program requirements.

 

Program Details

The Foundations of TTM program is open to the public, and has no prerequisites.

The program consists of 25 modules offered over a period of two years. Each module comprises a two-day weekend workshop followed by a review class a few weeks later. (Some modules will be combined into Three- or four-day workshops.)

The program comprises 375 hours of teaching time. Students will be required to complete homework assignments and individual practice sessions outside of class. The program will also offer clinical diagnosis and treatment experience under the guidance of expert TTM doctors and practitioners.

Students may choose to attend the entire program or select modules, and may complete modules at any SKI center to fulfill program requirements. Some modules may also be attended online.

Students who attend the entire program, complete all required assignments and sessions, and pass the final examination will receive a certificate of completion from Sorig Khang International.

Jacqueline is a traditional Tibetan medicine practitioner as well as a yoga teacher. She leads groups on yoga & spiritual retreats around Asia. She is the co-founder of Basic Essence holistic wellness centre and the current president of ATTM (Singapore), founded in 2008 to preserve and promote the ancient healing arts of traditional Tibetan medicine. She is also Sorig Khang International (SKI)'s, formerly IATTM, International TTM & Ku Nye teacher, conducting training in traditional Tibetan massage & other TTM external therapies. A student of Dr. Nida Chenagtsang and a practitioner of Yuthok Nyingthig, the spiritual practice of Tibetan medicine, Jacqueline is a guide for Medicine Buddha Healing, Mantra Healing, Nejang and Yuthok Nyingthig retreats.
